The Heywood Centre

The RIDL Dyslexia Centre was founded in 1996 by Heather and Michael Berrisford. It arose from a need to provide assessments based on educational rather than psychological need, and in response to frequent demands for a tuition centre for dyslexics. Today we have a broad client base ranging from 5-year-old children to mature adults. The vast majority however, are within school or college. Most students are referred to us because of under achievement. There are a number of reasons for failing to reach potential, of which Dyslexia is one. We are committed to the early assessment, recognition and remediation of dyslexic difficulties. We believe that everybody is entitled to the very best education available. We can provide professional advice and individual tuition to suit the individual, whatever age or level of study.

Assessment

We offer two types of assessment.

1)     Basic Assessment – consisting of a reading and spelling test and a colour overlay (Scotopic Sensitivity Test). This assessment is mainly used to determine a starting point within the remediation programme offered at the centre. Continual Assessment is used throughout the course to monitor progress from which progress graphs are then produced.

2)     Full Assessment – consisting of reading and spelling tests, verbal and non-verbal tests, a dyslexia test (which includes short term memory tasks, sequencing skills and phonological tests), and a full written report, which carefully analyses the results.

Tuition

Tuition is delivered on a one-to-one basis by the use of a unique computerised multi-sensory package. The course of tuition is tailored to the individual in order to meet their needs. We also use a variety of other multi-sensory resources to aid acquisition of automatic responses. Every tutor at the Centre is fully trained and experienced in the use of our methods. The computerised system is a Learning programme as opposed to a Teaching programme, as research has proven that a dyslexic can learn but they can not be taught in the conventional sense. The computer programme regularly accessed provides the student with exceptional progress in the areas of reading, spelling and typing skills. Typically a student will attend the Centre for 2 hours per week, 1 hour a day.  However older students may attend the Centre for the 2-hour session in 1 day. The Centre also offers an intensive Summer School during the summer holidays.  The Summer School focuses on handwriting skills, number work and the regular computerised programme.

Help and advice

We offer practical help and advice to students, parents, schools and colleges on dyslexia and teaching strategies. We provide a comprehensive library of books for parents and students to peruse in order to understand the condition more. We also offer a small room in which to speak to other parents and to view video’s about dyslexia. We have links to other organisations and research teams should any question posed be outside our scope of knowledge.
